When a sidewalk needs replacing
Patching can hide a problem for a season. Replacement solves it. We recommend replacing flags when they are:
- Cracked through or broken into pieces
- Sunken, tilted or rocking because the base below has failed
- Covered in old patches of asphalt or mismatched concrete
- Sloped the wrong way, sending water toward the building or leaving puddles that freeze
- Raised by settlement or roots, creating trip hazards at the joints
New installations follow the same method, whether you are building a sidewalk for a new building or replacing an entire frontage during a renovation. Full replacement is one of the most requested parts of our sidewalk repair Manhattan work.
How we build a sidewalk that lasts
1. Remove the failed concrete
We saw cut clean lines and remove damaged flags full depth, so the new concrete meets the existing sidewalk at a straight, solid joint.
2. Prepare the base
Most sidewalk failures start underneath. We remove soft material, add and compact a stable base, and correct drainage problems before anything is poured.
3. Set forms to grade
Forms are set to the correct elevation and slope so the new sidewalk ties in with the curb, the building line and the neighboring flags.
4. Place and finish
We use high strength 4000 PSI concrete placed at the thickness NYC DOT specifications call for, with thicker sections where vehicles cross the sidewalk. Joints are tooled at regular spacing and the surface receives a slip resistant broom finish.
5. Cure and protect
The new sidewalk is taped off and protected while it cures. Light foot traffic is usually fine after 24 to 48 hours, and we let you know when it is ready.
Permits and inspection
Sidewalk replacement in New York City requires a NYC DOT permit. We handle the application and build the work to the permit's conditions. If the replacement is correcting a violation, our DOT sidewalk violation removal service covers the close out steps.
Matching your block
Most Manhattan sidewalks are standard gray concrete, but some blocks, especially in historic areas like Greenwich Village and SoHo, have bluestone, granite or special finishes. We check before quoting so the new work fits in and meets any landmark requirements.

Sidewalk Replacement & New Installation FAQs
When is replacement better than patching?
When flags are broken through, sunken, heavily patched or sloped incorrectly, patches rarely last and are generally not accepted as a proper repair. Full depth replacement of the affected flags is the durable fix.
How soon can people walk on the new sidewalk?
Light foot traffic is usually fine after 24 to 48 hours, depending on the weather. We keep the area protected while the concrete cures and let you know when it is ready.
What concrete do you use?
We use high strength 4000 PSI concrete placed at the thickness NYC DOT specifications require, with thicker sections where vehicles cross the sidewalk.
